After the blog update was posted last night (Sunday, May 23), Dr. Larry led us in a devotional about Pentecost and how that might tie into our mission work here in New Orleans. Brother Vance Moore arrived around 9:00 p.m., and it was great to see him again! In addition to coordinating all of the work at Westside Mission Center, Vance is also now the Associate Regional Minister of the Greater River Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Vance also got married Super Bowl weekend, and we rejoice with him.
This morning Jo prepared scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy for breakfast. What a treat! Vance visited with us about the jobs we would be working on during the week. He also reminded us to drink plenty of water due to the extreme heat here. He showed us both work sites. One is a house on Carnot that belongs to an elderly lady. This was a new construction, and our job was to putty and sand the drywall. The other house is a two-story on Bruxelles. It has been gutted, with only a few of the upstairs room having drywall on them.
We divided into two groups. The group working at the Carnot house consisted of Dr. Larry, Jessica Blankenship, Alex Rybolt, Jansen Williams, Lisa Thrower, and Kellie Reese. The group working on the Bruxelles house consisted of Larry Thompson, Jessie Lyn Cochran, Jim Thrower, and Scott Rybolt. Jon Daniel went back and forth between the two houses.
One of the highlights for some of us today was seeing Pastor Howard Washington again. Those of us who were here two years ago worked a lot with Pastor Washington, and we love and adore him. Strange thing is, he looks younger than he did two years ago! He is 83, but he must be one of the very youngest 83 year olds in the world! Today we also met Pastor Elijah of Elijah Ministries. Westwide Mission Center has partnered with Pastor Elijah on multiple projects.
Jo is fixing pork tenderloin, green beans, and baked potatoes for dinner, and it smells wonderful! Then Dr. Larry will lead us in our daily devotional, and we will discuss where we saw God today.
Have you asked yourself this same question? Where did you see God today? Sometimes he shows up in the least expected places. Be still and listen . . . Where did you see God today?
Looks like you all are working REALLY hard!! Stay cool and keep smiling! You are making a difference!
