Preparation for New Orleans Mission Trip - May 23-29, 2010

New Orleans, Louisiana - a city ravaged by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, is below sea level. Hurricane Katrina caused storm surges up to 20 feet. The storm surges resulted in over 50 breaches in levees. It is estimated that 80% of New Orleans was underwater after Katrina with the death toll in Louisiana being estimated at 1,577. The hardest hit area was the Lower Ninth Ward, which housed many people who were living below the poverty line. After the hurricane, thousands of people were left without homes and/or without employment.

A group from our congregation spent a week in New Orleans helping people in the Lower Ninth Ward in May of 2008. A second mission trip to New Orleans is planned for May 23-29, 2010, where we will again be working through the Westside Mission Center. We will try to update this blog daily to keep you informed. Please pray that our trip is productive, that we help make a positive difference in the lives of some of the people in New Orleans who so desperately need it, and that we work as God's hands as he works through us on this mission trip.
